Preparing for Your Visit

Preparing For Your Visit

The doctor-patient relationship matters. Developing personalized osteopathic and functional medicine treatment plans with patients is my privilege.

Please note: your osteopathic and functional treatment plan can supplement any primary care plans; all patients should have a separate primary care physician.

To be sure Synchrony Osteopathy is appropriate for you, I begin with an initial complimentary phone conversation. This 15-20-minute call provides space to ask and answer any specific questions you have.

Before we begin an ongoing doctor-patient relationship, first-time patients will have a one-time 80-minute consultation. Together, we undertake a medical assessment, which includes exploring your medical, developmental, trauma, and social history, as well as a focused physical exam and an osteopathic structural exam. If indicated, osteopathic manipulation may be offered on the first visit. After your consultation, we can consider if Synchrony Osteopathy is appropriate for you. Ongoing appointments are 40 minutes.

What to Expect

Effective treatment depends on a trusting doctor-patient relationship. Due to the nature of osteopathic treatment, informed consent for physical touch is foundational. Please let me know immediately and at any time during your appointment if anything is uncomfortable.

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing. To protect patients who might have chemical sensitivities or respiratory problems, please refrain from wearing scented products and perfumes; please also refrain from smoking prior to your appointment.

Osteopathic treatment alters the dynamics between your body’s tissues and fluids, and the healing process takes time. You might notice a subtle difference the day of treatment and the day after and then increasing awareness days later. Typically, you will feel relaxed immediately after treatment. Occasionally, patients experience fatigue or mild soreness after a treatment — this can be a normal sign that the process is continuing and the imbalances are starting to heal. Please contact me if you experience any uncomfortable symptoms after a treatment. Healing time is subject to many factors, but generally the more chronic the issue, the longer a course of treatment will take. You can typically see signs of improvement within four or five treatments.

Following treatment, please take it easy for a few days, if possible. Get adequate rest, refrain from high-impact workouts, avoid excessive alcohol, caffeine, and cannabis, and drink a lot of water. Schedule other treatments, such as massage, acupuncture, physical therapy, or homeopathy, at least 72 hours after your osteopathic appointment. This will allow your system adequate time to fully respond to each treatment before the next is introduced.
